We believe that animals should be raised where they ecologically belong and thrive, which is why we’re proud to raise animals in California and New Zealand where they have year-round access to grass pastures and rangelands.

California The climate and geography of California are highly favorable to raising livestock on grass. Our flagship ranch is home to the Niman family, our cattle, and our heritage turkey breeding flock. For our cattle, we use carefully managed rotational grazing practices that mimic the patterns of ancient and prehistoric herbivores, improve soil fertility and water-holding capacity, and reduce soil erosion.  Well-managed grazing also increases carbon sequestration, the process through which plants remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and deposit it in the soils, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. In raising our turkeys, as with our cattle, we never use waste ponds for the manure.  Instead, we return all manure back to the land as composted fertilizer, improving the health of the soil.

New Zealand New Zealand shares many of the climate and terrain features that make California ideal for raising cattle, but, because it’s in the other hemisphere, with animals maturing at the opposite time of the year. This is an integral part of our vision for a sustainable, year-round meat industry. Following the global grass seasons eliminates the need for regular feed shipments, which reduces the cost and impact on the environment. Raising cattle in these seasonally diverse regions allows us to provide customers with beef from mature, grass-fattened cattle —best-in-season—throughout the year.
